THE WORKSHOP

A Film Adventures workshop overview.

After meeting and warm up activities each participant is given a specific character from the screen play. Each film adventure has a unique screen play that is used to guide and inspire the film.

The first read

In a group circle the screen play is read out aloud by everyone to share the story and discuss any thoughts or ideas that may arise. Participants are encouraged to think about their character and how they might like to contribute with costumes, ideas and extra dialogue.

The first Rehearsal

Select scenes from the screen play are chosen to begin the rehearsal process and model it to the whole group. Understanding how characters move about in a scene and understanding their motivation helps to establish the basics. Once the basics become familiar we can move to a location and develop the scene further.

Going on set.

On location the scene is further developed with rehearsals and we begin to film. Improvisation and trying out any ideas that arise is encouraged, this gives the editor more options when putting the film together.

The shoot continues.

A schedule allows for groups to prepare and rehearse scenes while another group shoots their scene.

Set building and costumes

Some sets and props can also be worked on while scenes are being shot.

Group scenes.

Some scenes in the film require the whole cast and a special set. This is often near the end of the film allowing for lots of preparation and rehearsal.

Games and activities.

Sometimes filmmaking can be hard work.  Games and activities help everyone take a break after a big scene or a busy morning. Designing a poster for the film or playing an active game can help everyone relax.

The wrap party

We always have a wrap party to celebrate completing the film.

Editing

After each day the video is given to the editor so that it may be edited into the final film. Sometimes the editor will showcase a scene from the previous day so that we can see our progress.

The final screening.

At the end of the week the film is finished by the editor just in time for the first screening. Family and friends are invited to attend a premiere of the film. Some special film awards are given to each participant.

The final film.

The final film is available for every participant as a private file download or private streaming video.

Here you can see a trailer and outtakes for the film Robokid, one of the films made at Film Adventures.
